Golden Punch a novel authored by Dr Balwant Singh Sandhu

In a domain where in India sports writers are scarce and performance in competitive sports of nation’s athletes and sportspersons is yet to match with other nations like China, Japan, England, USA etc, there are some passionate sports lovers and educationists like Principal Dr Balwant Singh Sandhu who are keeping the hope alive by their sports writing which is inspiring youth always.

In his latest achievement, Dr Sandhu’s book Golden Punch An inspiring sports novel based on the life of famous Punjabi-Indian Boxer Kaur Singh is now part of academics when it is to be taught in the Guru Nanak Dev University syllabus of Bachelor of Physical Education And Sports (BPES) from the year 2024 to 2027 in the compulsory subject of Punjabi language in the degree class .In this book Dr Sandhu portraits life of the legendary Indian Boxer who rose from from Punjab’s Sangrur district beginning his career as a farmer, get into Indian armed forces , shines in boxing sports to win golden laurels in Asian Games and other international championships to be awarded Padam Shri and Arjuna Award and then again resorts to farming in later years. It nicely depicts the journey with interesting anecdotes bringing sports boxing rings and rural grounds alive while when reads the novel.

SCD Govt. College Alumnus who is now Principal in a Punjab rural college Sri Guru Angad Dev College, Khadur Sahib has been a promising player in his Alma Mater at Ludhiana. Brij Bhushan Goyal Organizing secretary of the Alumni Association of the Ludhiana college has congratulated Dr Sandhu who he said has made all the alumni proud as he himself was also an outstanding athlete in the Ludhiana college. Principal Manjit Singh Sandhu from Udaipur, an Ludhiana ex Principal of Kendriya Vidyalaya and also an alumnus and an outstanding sportsman in the Ludhiana college said that Dr Sandhu’s books is a unique effort which needs to be translated in other languages too. Dr Sandhu has also written 2 other such books titled as 'Gumnaam Champion' and 'Ik Pind Di Khed Gatha -Village Chakkar' which are also liked by the sports fraternity immensely.

The history the of archery in India and abroad is very old. Although its military importance is not considered as more important in the modern era but it still attracts the youth interesting in shooting practice. it is still part of the national and international sports events. So how archery still offer the brighter career.

The history of archery in India is linked to ancient times. Archery is mentioned in epics like Ramayana and Mah
abharata. Characters like Lord Rama, Arjuna, and Eklavya were great warriors of archery. Archery was an important part of warfare for ancient Indian warriors. Archery was used not only in war but also in hunting and other religious rituals.

The history of archery abroad is also rich. Archery was used for both war and hunting in ancient Egypt, Greece, and China. In the Middle Ages, archery was a major martial art in Europe. During the time of the Mongol Empire, archery was used highly effectively in cavalry battles. In Japan, Kyudo (Japanese archery) is regarded as a spiritual and martial art.

Military Importance of Archery in the Modern Era is still continued and attracting the youth.The military importance of archery has diminished in the modern era as firearms and other modern weapons have replaced it. However, archery is still used in some special forces for silent target shooting. Apart from this, archery is used for military training and promotion of discipline.

To promote shooting in government schools Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann-led Punjab Government has started to set up 10-meter shooting ranges at least in one school in each district, said Punjab Education Minister, Harjot Singh Bains at Mohali Shooting Range today.

He was here to felicitate the Olympians and international shooting players on the occasion of the Punjab State Shooting Championship held by the Punjab Rifle Shooting Association.

He said that the first shooting range would come up at Sri Anandpur Sahib out of the first phase 10 shooting ranges. He said that apart from that the state would promote hockey in schools too by laying six-side astroturfing. Similarly, swimming would also be promoted in government schools.

Appreciating the contribution of Punjab shooting players in the recently held Paris Olympics,  he said that after hockey where 10 Punjab players represent the Indian team, Punjab is also marching ahead to be the nursery of shooting players as it has contributed 7 players out of a total 17 shooting players participated at Paris Olympics. He said that the Punjab Chief Minister has given a cash prize of Rs One Crore each to the eight players of the Bronze Medal Winner Hockey Team besides Rs 15 lakh each to the other 11 participants of the Paris Olympics. Earlier, Punjab had given Rs 15 lakh to each player for gearing up for the Olympics.
     
He felicitated the Punjab Shooting Players who represented India during the Paris Olympics including Sifat Kaur Samra, Anjum Moudgill, Arjun Babuta, Arjun Singh Cheema, Vijayveer Sidhu and World Champion Amanpreet Singh by giving Rs 75000 each on behalf of Punjab Rifle Shooting Association while Asian Games, World Cup Winners and Asian Championship Winners Ganimat Sekhon with 50,000, Gurjot Singh Khangura, Bhavteg Singh Gill, Harmehar Singh Lalli with 25000 each, Raj Kanwar Singh Sandhu, Sartaj Tiwana and Jasmin Kaur 15000 each while Coaches Sukhraj Kaur and Gurpreet Singh felicitated with Rs 25,000 each.
      
He congratulated the Arjuna Awardee and Olympian Gurbir Singh Sandhu for motivating the Punjab players to excel at International level matches and competitions and assured him of briefing their contribution to Punjab CM S. Bhagwant Singh Mann. 
      
Former IAS and Keerthi Chakra awardee, S S Boparai while recalling the journey of setting up of the North India’s first shooting range at Ferozepur during his stint as Deputy Commissioner, said that every sport sought dedication to excel at the world level. He expressed hope that the Punjab Shooting Players would soon lead the Nation like Hockey Players.
      
Gurbir Singh Sandhu who also happens to be President of the Punjab Rifle Association said that with the patronage of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Association would eye on Medals in Los Angeles Olympics.
     
He said that the 59th Punjab State Shooting Championship hosted at Mohal’s Phase 6 Shooting range has witnessed a record participation of 1700 players across the district, out of which over 600 bagged the positions. 
      
Education Minister accompanied by Chairman Punjab Water Supply and Sewerage Board, Dr Sunny Singh Ahluwalia while distributing the prizes to the winners, also announced a grant of Rs 10 lakh to the Association for helping the underprivileged shooting players to give them opportunities to excel at the National and International level. Chairman, Punjab PHD Chamber of Commerce R S Sachdeva was also present.

It is with great pleasure that I bring to your attention the outstanding participation of Sgt. Cynthia Gore in the women's upright cycling event. Sgt. Gore's dedication and discipline have been truly remarkable, leading to her success and contribution to the overall team.

There is no doubt that Sgt. Gore's efforts have brought great pride to the Army and the country as a whole. Her perseverance and commitment to excellence are certainly an inspiration to all members of our team.

Central Civil Services Cultural and Board are organizing the All India Services Kabaddi (Men & Women) tournament from 20th February to 24th February 2023 at New Multipurpose Hall, Dehradun.

Trial for the selection of Punjab Kabaddi (Men and Women) teams for this tournament will be held at Guru Nanak Stadium, Ludhiana on February 13, 2023, at 10 am.

The spokesman of the sports department further informed that in these trials security services personnel/para-security organizations/central police organizations/police/RPF/CISF/BSF/ITBP and NSG etc., autonomous parties/undertakings/public sector Banks including central ministry run banks, excluding casual/daily workers, temporary office workers, newly recruited employees who have been in regular services for less than 6 months, Government employees (regular), government officials (regular) of different departments can participate only after receiving NoC from their departments.

The cost of travel, accommodation and food in this tournament will be paid by the player personally.

All is set for 10th National Gatka Women Championship

The oldest registered Gatka sports organisation of the country, the National Gatka Association of India (NGAI), is organizing its 10th National Gatka (Women) Championship from January 20 to January 21 at Mata Sahib Kaur Girls College Talwandi Sabo, Bathinda district. This mega event is being organised with the help of Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee. 

Giving this information Harjeet Singh Grewal, president of National Gatka Association said this Gatka competition would be held for Sub-junior, Junior and Senior age groups in association with Gatka Association Punjab and District Gatka Association Bathinda where teams from more than dozen states under 14, U-18, U-22, U-25 age groups would participate. This competition will be conducted as per the rules of World Gatka Federation and NGAI.

Meanwhile national coordinator of NGAI Simranjeet Singh informed that all adequate arrangements have been made for food and stay of all players. He further added that each team has to bring their own Gatka kit to take part in the event. All the participants would be provided with certificates.

Indian Players won men's and women's singles too

Total five teams -Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Switzerland and India participated in this prestigious Championship


New Delhi: 26th November 2022: (PIB//The Sports Screen)::

Indian players won men's and women's singles, mixed doubles, doubles and team titles in USIC International Railway Sports Association Table Tennis Championship which was organised by North Western Railway Sports Association under the aegis of Railway Sports Promotion Board from 21st November to 25th November 2022 at Jaipur. Total five teams -Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Switzerland and India participated in this prestigious Championship.

The Championship was inaugurated by Mr. Gautam Arora, AGM, NWR on 22nd November 2022. Chairman CTT, USIC Mr.  Sebastian Picca, Director Activity Mr Kevin Lebure, Secretary Railways Sports Promotion Board Mr Prem Lochab, General Secretary North West Railway Sports Association Mr. Anuj Kumar Tayal were present on the occasion. Indian players made the country and Indian Railways proud by securing first position in men's and women's team event, doubles in men's and women's category, mixed doubles and first place in men's and women's singles competition.

Ronit Bhanja of Indian Railways won gold, Siksha Jain silver and Anirban Ghosh bronze medal in men's singles and Sutirtha Mukherjee of Indian Railways won gold, Dharna Sen silver and Poyamanti Vaishya bronze medal in women's singles.

Indian Railway players won gold, silver and bronze medals in mixed doubles events. In men's doubles, the Indian team won gold, silver and France won bronze medals, similarly in women's doubles, Indian team won gold, Czech Republic won silver and India and Czech Republic players won bronze medals.  In the team event, Indian Railway's men's team won gold, France's silver and Czech Republic won bronze medals and in the women's section, India won gold, Czech Republic's silver and France's bronze medals.

During closing ceremony, Chief Guest Mr. Vijay Sharma, General Manager - North Western Railway honoured the winners with medals and trophies. Mr Deepak Peter  Gabriel Vice President RSPB & PED Railway Board was guest of honour. Mr. Brijesh Kumar Gupta, president  NWRSA and CAO, Mr Gautam Arora AGM, NWR, Mr Prem Lochab, Secretary, RSPB, Mr Anuj Kumar Tayal, Secretary  NWRSA, Mrs Sebastian Picca, Chairman CTT USIC, Mr Kevin Lebure director activity, PHOD'S', Sports coordinators from RSPB and many officers of Railways were present on the occasion.
